We are often made to feel less than if we aren’t part of a couple, and seeing this societal norm played out on social media day in and day out doesn’t help. And while dating and/or being married can be a beautiful thing, flying solo can be just as lovely. In fact, the single life has plenty of perks, and we’ve rounded up our top 10 below.

1. Utter Remote-Control Domination

If you’ve ever been in a relationship and had a shared TV, you know what this means. No complaints about chick flicks or too many sports. Arguments over whose turn it is to pick the movie? Nope. And no fights over what’s on the DVR. It’s just you, the television and hours of long-dreamed-about control over the remote. Weekend-long binge sesh of Handmaid’s Tale? Don’t mind if I do.

2. The Sexual Freedom is Liberating

For better or worse, many of us put pressure on ourselves when it comes to our sex lives. Is this right or wrong? Are we too sex crazed? Are we not having enough sex? Google can only help you so much, and let’s face it – sex is a big part of relationship, so the pressure to keep up with what’s “normal” can feel overwhelming. When you are on your own, you are the master(bator) of your domain. 

3. Cooking (or Not Cooking) While Single Can Be Delightful

Whether you cook yourself a single poached egg, take on a veggie lasagna and freeze most of it, or decide that a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch is what’s for dinner, you’re calling the shots. 4. Sleeping Solo is So Spectacular

The big spoon/little spoon can be super cute, as is snuggling on the couch. But if you’re someone who sweats by simply adding a dash of cayenne pepper to your eggs, the temperature of solo sleeping alone can be life-changing. Spread out. Sleep on whatever side of the bed you’d like. Diagonally! With no covers! With all the covers! Do whatever it is you want simply because you can. And if you were previously with someone who snores, you are no longer fantasizing about a murder by pillow-smothering.

5. No Small Talk = Heaven

If you’ve been on the online dating circuit and have been up against the challenges of conversation starters, you know that a temporary or even permanent break from this can be a gift from heaven. There are only so many chit chats you can have about “this weather we’re having” or the food you’re eating before you want to pull your own hair out. Of course, the other side of that coin is that there is no conversation at all, but silence can indeed be golden.

If you are suddenly single, being alone can feel uncomfortable…like you’re wearing clothes that are the wrong size. But after a while these clothes begin to fit perfectly, and you realize that you actually enjoy your own company more than you ever knew. Perhaps a solo trip somewhere you’ve been dying to go is in order. The world is your oyster, and you are its solitary pearl. 

7. You Can Do The Thing

Everyone has a thing, right? When you’re in a relationship, you have something you do that annoys your partner to no end and vice versa. Whether it’s snoring, chewing loudly or fogging up the mirror when you shower, you are now free to do The Thing ad nauseum if you so choose. Maybe you decide The Thing is no longer Your Thing anyway, but now it’s on your terms.  

8. You Save Cashola

Valentine’s Day? Rent a movie. Holiday season? It’s all about you, baby. Birthdays. None. Nada. Zilch. You’ve cut your cocktail and other bills in half. Walking down the street hand-in-hand can be enjoyable, but can you put a price, or lack thereof, on it? Yes. Yes, you can. And that price is a big old donut…that you can eat all by yourself.    

9. You Can Put Your Single Self First

There is nothing wrong with being selfish here and there, especially when you are single. Take those classes you’ve been wanting to take. Embrace a new hobby. Train for a marathon. Learn to cook or take your cooking to the next level. You are in the driver’s seat with no backseat drivers. Blast that gangster rap unapologetically. Whatever this looks like for you, putting yourself first is often liberating and life changing.

10. You Can Reconnect With Friends 

None of us mean to put friends on the back burner, but as life gets busy, it happens more often than we’d like to admit. Take the time to invest in your other relationships. Catch each other up on what you’ve been doing. Share old memories. Pick up where you left off with your early-morning running partner. Take that trip back home. No one in the history of friendship has ever said, “Oh, I really regret catching up with that buddy.” You might make the decision that friendships are not something you will ever put on the back burner again, relationship status be damned.
